NECESSITY OF PROMOTING THEATRE:
I am going to talk about how I see the situation of theatre nowadays and about my vision of his future. Also, I am going to add opinions, with their correspondent quotes, of some people about their vision of the future of theatre.
Theatre is a very important cultural movement in our society because since theatre appeared, it has have a lot of importance for people like the nobility and the bourgeoisie, (taking to account the majority of the population was illiterate and poor). They went to the theatre, because they knew reading, writing and they had culture and money for going to the theatre.
Today, in developed countries, people can going to the theatre with no problems because all children go to school and their families have money to pay an entrance but we don ´t value all this.
Nowadays, the situation of theatre is not as strong as in the contemporary theatre of two centuries ago, because, today, people prefer other entertainments, like cinema, football, walking, to go shopping, watching TV at home, etc, but theatre and, for example, visiting museums are not interesting for a lot of people. Therefore, serious arts are not as popular as others because people prefer the entertainments called `trash culture´ . Also, the lack of reading habits makes plays difficult to understand.
Above all, young people, prefer the entertainment of this trash culture and the most of them say that theatre is boring and it is for old people, that is, it is like theatre or other cultural movements were contagious or a bad thing:
`At Theatre Chapí, we are interested, especially, in to go up to young people. We know they are the public of the future and we try to provide their access to the spectacles which we select thinking in them. In order to promote their attendance, we have discounts …´. (http://www.teatrochapi.com/publico/index.html).
Some people don ´t like going to theatre because is more expensive than cinema, for example. Really, money is not a reason to not to go to the theatre in the twenty-one century and in developed countries, fortunately, but the majority of people don ´t go theatre by reasons of convenience and laziness in spite of people say they don ´t go to the theatre because it is very expensive.
Also, people don ´t go the theatre because we don ´t understand it and we have only a little information about the plays, perhaps because they aren’t promoted enough. For example, the premieres are announced, frequently, in television, but first performances not enough, only in newspapers and in entertainment sections both things are announced in the same way.
Now, we must to do something for the theatre like to promote it in order to learn ourselves of it. It is necessary to take measures in order to theatre be more popular and they have to teach us to admire the plays which are represented everyday.
`… our conscience is in calm because we have said this country needs: a vertebral theatrical politic, in order to create a theatrical web and orientated in order to convert theatre in a socio-cultural referent for all the society.´( By Manuel F.Vieites García, ADE-Theatre nº103, nov-dec, 2005). (http://www.revistasculturales.com/articulosLeer.php?cod=232&pag=4 ).
We have to value theatre, really, has more merit than cinema because a play is represented in direct and a film isn ´t lived broadcast because it is modified again and again.
The American dramatist Arthur Miller said that for theatre are waited hard days, in spite of he said public follow demanding and supporting it. Also, he said: `the great classic theatre do not exist now´ and he said that today in the sceneries there isn ´t space for experimental plays, for reason of the growing commercialisation, but in spite of the pessimist vision, he said `people follow wanting theatre´. `His survival is perhaps in little theatres which represent plays that don ´t fit in big theatres whit the help of the administrations´.( http://www.scherezade.com/teatro.html).
Finally, the actress Carmen Conesa thinks with optimism that future of actors is in theatre and not in cinema. She considered `theatre is the future´. `It is my fantasy. I think cinema and audiovisual has finished, cinema is going to convert in theatres because people are going to carry cinema at their home´.
