DRAMATIS PERSONAE: The characters are five:
Jimmy Porter: He is married to Alison. He, who has a strong character, is a violent person who argues a lot with her wife, Alison. The following quote says: “Jimmy is tall, thin young man about twenty-five, wearing a very worn tweed jacket and flannels (…) He is a disconcerting mixture of sincerity and cheerful malice, of tenderness and freebooting cruelty (…) makes few friends (…).”
Cliff Lewis: He, who is a friend of the marriage, lives with them. He gets on well with Alison better than with Jimmy. This quote says: “Cliff is the same age, short, dark, big boned, wearing a pullover and grey, new, but very creased trousers. He is easy and relaxed, almost to lethargy(…)”.
Alison Porter: She is Jimmy ´s wife, who is pregnant, but she loses her baby. She is Helena ´s friend and she knows the infidelity of her husband “ Hers is the most elusive personality to catch in the uneasy polyphony of these three people. (…) skirt she is wearing is a cherry red shirt of Jimmy ´s (…)the same age as the men.(…) She is tall, slim, dark. The bones of her face are long and delicate(…) her eyes, which are so large and deep (…)”.
Helena Charles: She is Alison ´s friend. She goes at Alison ´s home and she falls in love with Jimmy.“ She is the same age as Alison, medium height, carefully and expensively dressed.(…) she is very attractive.”
Colonel Redfern: Alison ´s father. “ large handsome man, about sixty.”
PLOT: Alison, Jimmy and Cliff live together. Alison and Jimmy are married and Cliff is their friend. A friend of Alison, Helena, appears in their home to stay there some days and Alison , who is pregnant, goes away of home and she is going to live with her father because Jimmy and she argue a lot and they are very angry. Helena and Jimmy fall in love but Alison, who loses her baby, comes back home and she knows the infidelity of her husband. Finally, the marriage is reconciled.
SCENERY: The story takes place in the Porter ´s home ( one-room flat) in the Midlands. It is a large Victorian house.
TIME: The present. Long time is taken between one scene and another.
The first act takes place in a early evening. It ´s April; the second act takes place two weeks later and, then, on the following evening; the third act, finally, takes place several months later and, then, few minutes later.
PERSONAL OPINION:
I like this play because the story is very interesting, but I think, its is a few slowly. This play is influenced by the absurd theatre because, in my point of view, the situation of the characters is a bit odd and, so, absurd. In my opinion Jimmy is the principal topic because he reflects the man of his time, he has a strong character. It reflects the authority of the male chauvinist of the society.
