Why does the author use autumn, night-time and the present to present his mind?

The story begins at night with the autumn moon waning. Night-time is when we dream and travel to places where we have no real control. It may seem that we choose what we do, but our choices rise out of our complex subconscious self. Could not this also be the case in real life, when we are awake and seemingly free? For this reason the story is told in real present time, just as that of dreams. We are the actors of our own imagination…And yet «You dream of falling in a vast blackness full of stars in the vault of time. It is daylight in a small hut» after drinking from the stream, it seems there is a dream within a dream and we are thrown back into daytime! There are visions of time passing «A thousand years of moths circle your mind like a candle flame» followed by many bloody battles being fought. We are taken momentarily taken away from the autumn forest where all is enchanting and strange, to some kind of horrible reality of mortal men. Although autumn is usually associated with death, and in fact, many of the choices taken on this journey lead us to some kind of death; it is a peaceful death a kind of, letting oneself die in nature. In fact the story, although initially, seems to be taking place at night in some kind of dream state the author is constantly playing with time, it is sometimes difficult to know when it is day and when it is night.
