Introduction.
About the hypertext:
Hypertext most often refers to text on a computer that will lead the
user to other, related information on demand. Rather
than remaining static like traditional text, Hypertext makes possible a dynamic
organization of information through links and connections. ( Wikipedia 2008 ®)
In this Hypertext written by Deena Larsen we find a short story in 16
pages, which can be both read in a linear or non-linear way depending on the
experience we would like to have with a hypertext. In it we find the story of a
couple that spend an afternoon in a Fair in Denver, all the story is developed
just in a while, specifically in the time that takes having a ride on a Ferris
Wheel. The argument revolves around the thematic of marriage, the main
character is a woman and she has to decide if getting married with her
boyfriend or not.
The author doesn’t give us much information about the characters that
appear all along the hypertext but we can imagine how they are, here we have
some of them in order of importance:
- The woman: She is a woman of about 30 years who got divorced 2 years
ago Now she’s got a boyfriend who he met a year ago but she’s not very sure
about getting married again because she doesn’t know if she’ll be able to live
all her life with the same man. She uses the ride on the Ferris wheel to
reflect on her life, her aspirations, her dreams… and finally she is able to
give him an answer.
- The man: He is a very nice man, very in love with his girlfriend and
he’s just waiting for her answer of about getting married. He is presented in
the text as a perfect man for her, he takes care of her and wants to protect
her with his arms all along the story. I think they’re a bit different, he’s
more simple. In my opinion the man just wants to live a good life with her and
doesn’t think too much about every single thing that happens in his life.
Here we can see how does their relationship work: FerrisWheels8
-Other characters without many importance: The old couple (FerrisWheels5),
her father (he doesn’t appear but she names him FerrisWheels7),
a little boy (FerrisWheels4),
teenagers (FerrisWheels16)…
