“Blasted”, play of Sarah Khane, a drama developed in five acts; it was presented on 12 of January of 1995 in the “Royal Court Theatre Upstairs” in London.
In this play it appears three personages: Ian, Cate and a soldier. Ian is a Welsh man of 45 years old, that he lived in Leeds the most of his life and that he adopted the accent of this country. It is about a man that he is obsessed with Cate. He is a protective man but he also is little kind; he likes a lot of drinking and smoking.
As regards Cate, she is a woman of 21 years old, Cate belongs to the middle class, she has the accent of the London south and she stammers when she is stressed. She worries about the other much, concretely she worries about the health state of Ian; she insists him a lot of for that he doesn't drink, but he doesn't want. We don't know nothing of the soldier, we only know that he goes to the hotel because he wants to kill Ian, because it happened something with this woman in the past. The soldier is a man very aggressive and little inconsiderate.
The play is developed in a room of an hotel in war time.
In the first scene, Ian attempts to persuade Cate of the fact that he loves her and that she returns with him. Cate has other couple, but even so Ian doesn't renounce. Cate wants to leave of the apartment but Ian says to her that it don't make since he can be dangerous. They have sexual relationships that night though Case doesn't want.
The soldier begins to describe how he killed to the people (children, girls, mothers and fathers) and that he maintains sexual relationships with them after. Ian, he threatened by the pistol, is also violated by the soldier.
The soldier explains that his girlfriend was murdered and violated also. The soldier commits suicide with a shot in the head.
Again, Case goes into stage carrying a hungry child between her arms. Cate wants to go and look for food but Ian says to her that she doesn't make it since he is very dangerous. Meanwhile, the baby dies hungry and Cate buries it.
When Cate goes and she looks for food, Ian exhumes to the baby to snatch him some pieces of flesh for can eat; it reflects an authentic act of cannibalism.
All the play is carried out in the same place, in a room of a hotel that it is composed by a double bed, a mini - bar with champagne in ice, a telephone and a vase of flowers. Therefore, we can say that it is about a only, rural and simple space.
With respect to time, we can say that the play is developed during a long period of time and mainly during the day. It makes reference to the present.
Referring to the stylistic and literary resources, concerning the valuation of the language we can say that it is used the verse and it is about a language quite simple and colloquial.
Concerning other aspects we appreciate the economic ones (a cost of production middle due to atrezzo) and the technical aspects (decrease difficulty of staging since there are few personages and all it is developed in a same stage)
Personal opinion: it is a play very dense, many things happen in few lines, but also it is realistic and unpleasant at the same time.
