“Far Away”, play of Caryl Churchill; it was carried out in the “Royal Court Theatre” in Great Britain in the year 2000.
The play is composed of three acts and three personages participate: Harper, Joan (niece of Harper), and Todd.
Joan is going to stay in house of her aunt a season. When she is in house, she listens some shouts from the outside and she decides to leave to see what is happening. What she sees is a truck full of people that they are crying, and she also sees her uncle that he was beating to a man and a child with an broom of iron in the interior of the granary.
When she confesses her aunt what she has seen, his aunt says to her that they are people that they are fleeing . Harper says to Joan that she and her husband hide to this people for giving them a sure place.
In the second act, a year afterwards, Joan works in a factory of hats with a boy called Todd. The hats are used for putting them to the condemned to death in the processions. The condemned will be burnt. Joan and Todd speak about the corruption in the industry of the hat and they fall in love during the days.
Again, the third act is localized in the house of Harper, the aunt of Joan. In it, Harper and Todd are found discussing about different animals, though those animals represent to different nationalities of the different countries, in reality.
Again, Joan appears that she wants to meet with Todd, that he was her husband now.
All the play is carried out in house of the aunt Harper, and also some scenes appear in a factory of hits. We can say that it is about a multiple, urban and a little complex space; but alone the space of the factory of hits.
With respect to time, we can say that the play is carried out during several years, that is to say, it offers an image of the past in contrast with the present.
Referring to the literary and stylistic resources, concerning the valuation of the language, we can assert that it is used the prose, and a language quite simple.
The others aspects that we can detect are the economic (a low cost of production) and the technical aspects (few difficulty in stage, because there are few personages and there is little atrezzo).
Personal opinion: in this play, we can see the topic of the “Great War” between all the countries. It makes reference to the immigration and other topics that they concern to our society currently.
The technique of the open end, proposed by Caryl Churchill in “Far Away”, encourages to the public to approach alternative relationships between the individual and the society.
