“Look Back in Anger”, play of John Osborne; it is a drama in three acts; it was published for “Faber and Faber Limited” in 1957, and the first edition was produced in 1960.
In this play it appears five personages: Jimmy and Alison (they are the protagonist marriage), Cliff (he is friend of both and that he lives in the same house), Hellenic (she is an old friend of the infancy of Alison). By the context of the play we can say that Jimmy is a man very possessive that he likes to order and discuss. Alison seems a simple and quiet woman that she obeys the orders of his husband and she listens his insults .Cliff is the intermediary of both and a good friend and confidant of Alison. Hellenic has the same age that Alison. And finally, the Colonel, that he seems be a man with a lot of authority and very serious.
The play tries about a marriage and a friend to both that they live in the same floor. Subsequently, Alison becomes pregnant and she receives the arrival from a friend from the infancy. She decides going to house of his father during a time due to the situation of stress that she lived in his house. All this occurs without that Jimmy know it because he was away, visiting an ill woman. When he returns, his wife isn’t, but if is Hellenic, that she stays with the husband of his friend a time there. But finally no of the two stay with Jimmy, and Alison makes up with him.
With respect to space, we can appreciate that this play is developed in the interior of a house, concretely in a dining room. Therefore, we can say that the space is only (the dining room), closed, urban and simple, in the play.
The development of the play takes place during the day, but not only during a day, but that it is carries out during several weeks, even months. It makes reference to the present, and the play occurs also at night.
Referring to the literary and stylistic resources, concerning the valuation of the language, we can say that in this play, it is used the prose and the verse in some instances; and it has a language a little colloquial and simple.
Referring to other aspects, we can appreciate that there is a clear situation of male chauvinism (socio-cultural aspects) in this play, that it would suppose a cost of production middle (economic aspect) and few difficulty of staging (technical aspect) because there are few personages and because it is developed in the same place.
Personal opinion: is a play with quite content and very realistic for me, since it reflects some aspects, though unpleasant, of the reality, as is the male chauvinism. But the play is very well and it is quite entertaining in general.
