“The Collection”, play of Harold Pinter, a comedy in several acts; the play was presented by "Associated Redifusion Television" in London, on 11 of May of 1961; subsequently it was put in stage in “the Aldwiych Theatre” on 18 of June of 1962.
In the play it appears four personages: Harry, Bill, James and Stella. Harry and Bill are two friends that they live in the same house; for the context we can deduce that Harry behaves as the older brother, that he helps to Bill even in his personal problems. As regards James and Stella are a marriage, that according to seem they have some problem related with the infidelity. According to the behaviour of James we can assert that he don't trust in his wife, since she has given to him some motives to mistrust. Stella is a woman that she like the liberty and that she has little interest in her marriage. Also we can say that all the personages are very quiet and serene, except James, that he has the image of a possessive man and that he gets angry a lot of when somebody feel his wife.
This play revolves around to the problem of infidelity that James and Stella suffer. This count to her husband what it happened with Bill a day in a hotel, then the husband of Stella goes to Bill's house to ask him about what it happened. Bill tells him that between he and Stella didn't occur nothing, but James doesn't believe it. James attacks to Bill with a knife. Subsequently, Harry wants to help his friend and he is going to speak with Stella on the other hand, without that they know it; she confesses all the truth in this visit, then Harry is going to his house and he says to Bill and Harry all. Finally, James believes all what Harry says. At the beginning James is a little angry, he goes home and he asks his wife by the truth again, but Stella doesn't reply.
The space where is developed the play is a stage distributed in three areas: two peninsulas and a promontory. Each area is different and it is separated of the other. To the left, it appears the house of Harry in Belgravia, it is decorated tastefully. In the same way, to the right of the stage, it appears the own set design of the floor of James in Chelsea, less sophisticated. Therefore, it is a same stage distributes in two different scenes, two different houses, in two different spaces.
As regards the time, according to Harold Pinter, the play starts late at night, and it goes developing in the time without defining the concrete time. The language that it is used in the play is simple, colloquial with some own expression. In this play we can find a lot of repetitions and some silences with doubts.
Personal opinion: the play is quite well in general, but for me, it needs a good end; without t let to the readers with the doubt what it would happen. The play reflects very well some aspects than they happen in the reality, as they are the infidelities and the jealousy.
