“The Kitchen”, play of Arnold Wesker, a tragedy in two acts and an intermediate; it was presented on 13 of  September of 1959 in short extension by the “English Stage Society” in the “Royal Court Theatre”, and on 27 of June of 1961  in long extension; but it was presented previously in London, in 1958.

As in this play there are many personages we go to proceed to the description of some of they, the most relevant. Max (the butcher): he is a corpulent and obscene man, of some fifty years old, that is passed all the day with a cigarette in the mouth and drinking, as Frank (the second chef). Raymond and Paul: Paul is a Jewish youth and for nothing distasteful; Raymond is an Italian youth that speaks almost perfect the English but with accent and also is very sentimental. It is considered two kids that work very hard and that they don’t enter any moment in touch with the waiters. Mr Marango: he is the owner of the restaurant, he has some seventy and five years old, grey hair and a sad expression in his face. And finally, Alfredo, who is considered an old chef of some sixty and five years old that works very hard and that shares all his knowledge; he is the typical man that it help to all, but he doesn’t accept help of nobody.

This play consists in a kitchen of a great restaurant. In the first act takes place the arrival of all the actors to the kitchen and the set in operation of the same. Within her happen the continuous confrontations between the personages and the good humour, that is to say, the situation that is lived in all the cooking stoves today. In the intermediate are carried out some changes and we arrive to know illusions of the personnel. And in the third act, the director of the restaurant will not be able to understand the agitation of the personnel and that the ire of one of them unfetters in a fit of violence, and stops all the culinary process.

As have been able to appreciate, such play is carried out in a kitchen of a great restaurant; therefore, we can verify that, it is considered a closed space, only and the truth is that also a little sophisticated.

With respect to time in the one which is developed the action, we can say that takes place during a complete work day, since the play begins at seven o’clock in the morning. For this, it is said that only it makes reference to the present.

Referring to the literary and stylistic resources, we can assert that concerning the valuation of the language, in the play is used the prose and a language a little sophisticated but simple.

In this play only are appreciated economic aspects (a high cost of production) and the technical aspects (great set difficulty in scene, since is corresponded with many furniture, ovens, etc.... and because there is a great number of actors to be all in a same stage).

Personal opinion: it is considered a play of the one which not you tire yourself of reading, it has situations of humour  and of ire, and it is very good because us reveal that it is what occurs within the cooking stoves of the large restaurant
