“Waiting for Godot”, play of Samuel Beckett; it was published in 1995 and it was presented on 13 of August of 1955 in the “Arts Theatre”, in London.
During the course of the play it appears five personages: Estragon, Vladimir, Lucky, Pozzo and a boy. In the first place, we speak of Estragon, we don't know the physical features of this personage, but he seems to have some 60 years old. Estragon is friend of Vladimir; this has few memory since he forgets the things very quickly. On the other hand, Vladimir appears; we don't find physical features of this personage but also we deduced that he has some 60 years old. Vladimir seems be more intelligent than Estragon. Lucky is other personage that appears in the play, either the author describes it physically, he has a character quite dreadful since he is the slave of Pozzo, he doesn't speak almost nothing. Pozzo is other personage, he is a man that makes what he wants with Lucky, this goes blind. Finally, it appears a boy that we don't know his name, but it seems to be that he works for Godot looking after his goats.
The play is about two men of some 60 years old, Estragon and Vladimir, that they are in a piece of open ground, under a tree, waiting for Godot. It doesn't know who is Godot, we don't know if he exists, not even we know if he is a person, we don't know if he is an animal, we don't know if he is God, we don't know if he represents the happiness, the liberty etc. The personages only know his name. They are bored waiting for Godot, they only speak. These even attempt suicide but they can't make it. They find Pozzo and Lucky, the first is as the owner of Lucky. Afterwards, Estragon and Vladimir meet with a boy that he says that he works for Godot looking after him the goats, the boy says to them that Godot will arrive on the following day, but it isn't certain.
The story is developed in two acts, the two days that Vladimir and Estragon wait for Godot. The space is the void because the set is minimum. A pair of stones and a tree in the middle of a path are the only space of the play. The personages stay in it (Vladimir and Estragon) or they go through there of path to some place (Pozzo and Lucky). The absurdity of the situation, the phrases without sense (or with a lot of sense, but cultured) and the disorientation and the ignorance predominate all the scheme of this story, full of symbolisms and philosophical meaning of the life.
Personal opinion: in my opinion, the play is quite absurd since many things haven't any sense since we don't know that they make two persons waiting for such Godot, and not either we know the motive. The play finishes equal, we don't know who is Godot neither we know that it happens with the main personages.
