Hi everybody! I want to wish you merry christmas(or merry winter solstice) and a happy new year! Have fun your new year’s eve! Anna “That’s all folks!”(Bugs bunny) I have just finished my second paper, everything is uploaded and I have already printed it. See you tomorrow! Anna I have been writing the abstract. Finally I will put write about this aspects: introduction, paths, characters, spaces, time, conclusion, biography about Adrienne Eisen and bibliography with all the links. I will focus my analisys on TIME. ******* I will be basing my analysis on Adrienne Eisen’s hypertext ‘Winter Break’. To begin with an introduction where I will explain how to deal with this closely new form of reading named hypertext. A good definition of hypertext will be “a collection of texts interconnected (with/by) hyperlinks, which allow the user to choose different paths”. I have analised this hypertext from the point of view of time, following these paths. To understand well the plot of the story, the reading of the whole story is needed, after that I have done a brief summary of characters’ features. Appear several spaces in “Winter Break”, nevertheless there are slightly references to time. To finish my analysis I will do a conclusion with some extra information about her; as well as a biography of Adrienne Eisen and a bibliography, where I will put all the links and information that I have checked. Anna I have made a list with all the spaces that appear in the story: L.A. Airport Anna I have been thinking about the hypertext structure, how I will organize it on my secondpaper. Finally I have decided that I will explain some things about the time in Winter break, some kind of introduction and then I will do two hyperlinks to inner-time and to outer-time. I have worked on it this afternoon: The time of a hypertext is not organized as usual; the facts or events appear, in this case, one after another. It seems to have some kind of connection that can only be understood when the whole hypertext is read. Due to this reading it many times is necessary until the all hypertext has been checked and all the paths have been tried. Being used to this kind of reading can be hard, but when you completely understand the setup it becomes easy. It can be very useful to read reasearching texts because there are many links that can drive you quickly to the point that you really want to read. It can also be helpful for students to study. Anna This part has been the most dificult one, because have had to do my best to get the clues of time. Here is the outer o external time: Outer time Refering to the outer-time, there are not clear quotations of outer-time such as dates or years, except of the first mark. There are five time marks that will helps the reader to guess; The first one and the most important is at “Exposed”; the main character says that Allie is twenty-six years old. However it doesn’t give the reader a lot of information of when the plot is happening, it gives a reference of how old are the characters. The second one is a cd of U2 that border the time line since their first album appear in October of 1980 until nowadays, because they refer to an album of this band the hypertext must have been written after the edition of their first cd, until nowadays. The third one is another cd, a Soul Asylum cd that border the time since their first album that was edited in 1984. It reduces the time line, because the author cannot do a reference of an album that has not been edited. The fourth one is an event of the hypertext, Allie and the main character go to the beach and lie on the beach. It can mean that the weather is good enough to go to the beach such as in spring or summer, however it can also mean nothing; the characters can go to the beach anytime if the weather is sunny. They also take an ice-cream anytime, in many countries eat ice-cream during all the year, without mind about the seasons. The fifth one will support the fourth one, it is refered to the title of the hypertext. ‘Winter Break’ that makes reference to the winter hollidays. Finally the reader can guess that all the plot happens in a year or many during a month or a week. As I said before, there is not any clear quotation about time and depending the reader interpretation it can change. Anyway in my own interpretation, everything happen in a month, in the “Winter Break”. There are two flashbacks, where we get some information about Allie and the Main Character’s past. The Main Character explains how good she was at volleyball and when Allie decided to go to the Whiskey. Anna Ok, I had not internet this week. Today I will work to finish my second paper as soon as possible! Here I have my analysis of the inner or internal time. Inner time Inne-time is not expecified, there are same time marks such as verbal tenses and adverbs. Verbal Tenses used to be in present in his hypertext, using present simple and present continous: Nevertheless, there are hardly any past tenses. Such as Present perfect or past simple The author refers to the past sometimes but she keeps on using present tenses: Some adverbs or time expressions that could help with guessing are: “early”, “all day” “always”, “At this moment”, “at the same time”, “at eleven”, “for today”, “While”, “again”, “at night”, “When the sun came up”, “before”, etc. The author also uses other ways of refering to the time, with verbs such as: “remember”, “was/were” Anna Ok! This will be the last time y upload something today. Here I handed a list with the characters: Main important characters: The Main Character Secondary characters: Rodrigo(‘The Evil Director’) ****************** Happy Saturday! Anna I have been analysing the characters and the main character has no name! I guess she is a girl because the author always says ‘her’ when she is talking about the main character. This girl and Andy are a couple, but they have problems. There is another girl, Allie… She is.. bisexual? Actually, she has some kind of boyfriend, Rodrigo, but Allie and the main character have sex. So… I have divided the characters in two groups, Main Important Characters and Secondary Characters. Anna I have alredy finished my introduction, I talk about hypertext and Adrienne Eisen works. I sure that it will be helpful to the reader… INTRODUCTION Hypertext is text which is not constrained to be linear, it has different links that allow the user choose the next step. The term was coined by Ted Nelson. It can have text, pictures or even sound; everything will be arranged in different ways depending on the author design thoughts. “Winter Break” is a hypertext written by Adrienne Eisen. Penelope Trunk (legal name Adrienne GreenHeart), was born Adrien Roston in Massachusets in 1966. She also uses “Adrienne GreenHeart” , but she signs her works with the name “Adrienne Eisen“. Nowadays, she lives in New York. Other hypertext works of this author are: “[Six Sex Scenes]” (1995) , “[The Interview]” (1999) , “[What Fits]” (2001) and “[Considering a Baby]”. She began to publish her hypertexts in 1984, she has won the prestigious New Media Invision Adward. On the other hand, we find other ways of writing of Adrienne Eisen; such as in literary magazines or her printed nobel, “Making Scenes” where she does an analysis of the diferences between printed literature and hypertext. There is also another book from 2007; Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success , Business Plus. pp. 224. ISBN 0446578649 . Anna |
