The
Sexton´s house
Mr.
Sexton seems to be the verger that takes after the church of a small town. Between
his obligations there is one of ringing the church bell.
For
some reason, he decides to take care after the boy when his father asks him to
abandon his house. Possibly, Mr. Sexton thought that the boy could be a good
apprentice and could have him working in his house for food and for a place to
sleep.
Also
it is possible that the Sexton were very good friends of the family, and just,
wanted to help the poor boy, but I’m afraid to say that this last thing doesn’t
seem to deduce from the story.
In
the Middle Age or in the age where occurs the action of our story, the job of a
verger was, without being a cushy job, well considered, and permitted, worthless,
to have a good level of life, depending of course, in the sizes of the church
at his charge.
So,
possibly, the Sexton’s house was more luxurious than the boy’s house. That is
why, his parents can not afford to maintain the boy any more, and, in the other
hand, the Sexton´s family think
he can be of their profit.
