In his notes, Eliot explains that these lines were inspired by the delusions that Antarctic explorers reported having suffered. Also it refers to the Biblical story of Emmaus: Luke 24, 15 and 16 “And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and when with them. But their eyes where holden that they should not know him” (KJV)
