I am going to start a commentary of a play whose title is The kitchen. This play was written by Arnold Wesker in 1961. But the original, shorter version was first presented by English Stage Society at the Royal Court Theatre on 13 of September of 1959. It is a play in two parts and it has an interlude. It is a very peculiar play because is based in a history of a kitchen and we are not used to see this type of plays. So the dramatis personae of this play is specially too, because they are in a kitchen and we only are going to see how they are in the kitchen and not in their life. The main character of this play is named Peter. He is German and in the kitchen he has a love whose name is Monique and she is waitress he wants to get married with her but she is married with other man and she is afraid of him. Then, there are the secondary characters that make the play very interesting because they are always speaking about the work they have in the kitchen and it show us the work that has to do a person to live in a city. Other two characters are Violet and Kevin; they are new in the kitchen and they represent the nervous part of the life of a worker because they want to do all the work they have and they are very exhausted. The character who would be the antagonist is Gaston; he is who has a fight at the beginning of the play. And the last important secondary character is Marango who is the leader of the restaurant. This restaurant, The Tivoli, is his life and he does everything for it. I am going to start speaking about the plot of the play; the play is based in a kitchen of a restaurant whose name is The Tivoli. There the people go to work and in this happens things as in the normal life. The first act of the play is in the kitchen, they are speaking about the fight that has taken place the night before between Peter and Gaston. In the kitchen there is so many work an the new clerks are exhausted because they have a lot of work and they are busy even in the breaks. At the end of the play Violet and Peter have a discussion because of a words that she say to him about his origin and they destroy the restaurant and Marango get so angry that he fires Peter. Marango is sad because he thought that he always has been a good person with them. the place of the play is all the time the same , it is the kitchen, it makes the play a little boring but it makes also that we put our eyes on the essential of the play, that is the kitchen. In one case the cookers are in the street chatting and commenting the day that they have had in the kitchen. But the place of the play is the kitchen where we can see all the acts, when the people discuss, when Peter and Monique fall in love, when Gaston and Peter have discussions, where Marango is always getting angry with everybody etc… it is a closed place and it makes us to feel less comfortable. The time of the play is always the same, it is the present, and it has coherence, I want to say that the play has a correlation. Then we can speak about the style resorts; for instance, I can speak about the language. It is an every- day English because the people who are in the play are people who are working and they speak like us when we are with our friends. It was written in prose. To finish with the formal aspects of the play, I can add that in the play the political, social and cultural aspects are presents during all the play, because of the difference of races that there are in the kitchen and also because the life is not easy for a person who has to work so many hours a day. From my point of view, the kitchen is a play that represents the relationship behind the people and I think the author wanted to point out also in the topic of the races because he mix a lot of people in a kitchen a nobody is from the same place. It causes discussions and it is what the author wants. |
