I am going to write about a play whose name is Phaedra's love. The author of this play is Sarah Kane. It is a play in 8 scenes. It was published in 1996and the first representation Wad in London. The description of the characters: we can say that in this play is bigger than in other plays that I have read. Phaedra is the main character, she is possessive and she is in love with her stepchild, she has sex with him and then she kills her self. Hippolytus is a prince; he is the stepchild of Phaedra. Theseus is the king; he is the father of Hippolytus. He is married with Phaedra and he has sex with Strophe who is the child of Phaedra. They are the main characters of the play. The plot of the play takes place in where they live, they are a royal family. In the first scenes Phaedra is thinking about her stepchild and he is a boy who does not do anything. He is always seeing the television eating etc... Phaedra loves him and she goes to tell it to him. He is not affected but they finish having sex. Then he says that it is not important to him. She kills her self. His sister wants to know if the death of her mother is because of him or not, she speaks to him and he says that he is innocent. At the end he has to go with the justice and he is condemned to die and his father is agree too with this decision. His sister does not want it and she defend him and his father kills her. When he realises what he has already done he kills Hippolytus and the he kills his self too. It is a totally tragedian end because everybody dies. The time of the play is near now because it speaks about the sex with normality, also because the technologically is present etc… The style resorts: we can say that the author uses an easy language to be understood by everybody. It is very easy because is an every-day English. There are not too many difficult words. We do not need the dictionary to understand it because with the context we understand everything. We can speak about this play, about some religious aspects too: In a scene the church appears criticised to do something that is not very good to listen. About the society we can say that is present in the play also, because when Hippolytus is going to be killed everybody is saying their opinion, knowing that it does not serve for nothing. As a personal conclusion, I think this play is the most I liked because Sarah Kane is a critic of the nowadays society and of the corruption of the church, for example. I have liked because I think the society is corrupted and she is denouncing it through the culture, for instance, the theatre. |
