The paper that I am going to write is about the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. This play was written by the author Tom Stoppard in 1967 in London. It is a comedy of 3 acts. I am going to start with the dramatis personae ; the character description. It is very difficult to describe all the characters in this play, because there are so many. The reason for having so many characters is because there are literally two plays in one. And so, I am going to describe the two most important ones. The main characters are, like we can imagine from the title, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. I can describe them like people well- situated in society because in the beginning of the play the author says that they are well dressed. Later we can describe them as ignorant because they trust Hamlet, who uses them and Hamlet, in the end, gets what he wants, their deaths and his life. Speaking about this characters I have to say that they are at first absent-minded because they forget to go to the meeting with Hamlet but then they intent to do everything to go to see him. If we put our eyes on the argument of the play we can describe it on this way: The main characters are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and they have to go to a meeting to Elsinore and they absolutely forget it. When they remember the engagement they meet with a tragically characters that make the play more interesting and immediately they go to the cattle of Hamlet to represent a play. The main characters are in the castle and they have to search the cause why Hamlet is extremely strange. They investigate and they discover what Hamlet has done, he has killed Polonius and immediately they have to go to the king to give a letter where is written the sentence of Hamlet. By contrast the king in a unexpected moment of the play, he change the letter and he sentences Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and is in this way as it occurs in the play. Speaking about the places where the play is developed, we can say that at the beginning of the play we do not know the play where is situated, but then we know in the middle of the play it is situated on a castle, there we can see the meeting with Claudius and Gertrude. The next play that we see is the boat when they travel to do the meetings that are obligated. I have observed that there are opened and closed places. For instance, the castle is closed and the boat is opened. It makes the reader to feel different in both cases because when we are in a boat we feel the freedom and in this castle in particular we could feel like in a jail because you have to do what the people there say to you. Now, I have to start speaking about the period that involves the play. I don't know sure, but it can be the period of Elizabeth's queen because it is the type of theatre that she likes to see and it is the type of theatre that has born in this years. I think so because in some films that I have seen the queen Elizabez appeared seeing this type of theatre. We can analyze the temporal aspects of the play: It starts with the present and it continues with the present and it makes us to see that it is a text with totally coherence. It follows the line of the time; it does not jump in no place of the play. With the Style resorts, we can say that the language is not enough difficult. The text is written in prose and we can say that is a colloquial but sophisticated language. To finish the paper I have to say it is a play that cost lots of money. We have to understand that this play is like 2 plays at the same time, there are more characters, more stages, etc… From my point of view, I think it is a very good play because it changes the everyday point of view of the body. I think it is important to make normal body the main characters and in this case Hamlet is a secondary character, and I think Tom Stoppard had a very good idea doing it on this way. |
