PLOT
The stage
is dark, but we can see a woman (Mary), who is cleaning the stage. Suddenly,
Goldberg appears. He works to Mr J, who is a good director of theatre. The play
is a rehearsal of a theatre’s play. The topic of this play that they are
mounting is about Jesus’ life. The script of the play is the Bible. They
represent since when God makes the world, Adan and Eva, the story about the
gold calf, the story about Abraham and Isaac, and also the crucifixion. But in
this play there are a lot of problems: the actors hate Mr J, and they leave the
play sometimes, Goldberg hates Mj, too, and he wants to leave the play, too;
one actress is beautiful (Teresa), and the other actors have sex with her (they
make an orgy)… But at the end, they perform the play. The play (Variaciones
Goldberg) ends with the beginning of the play that they are rehearsing.
DRAMATIS PERSONAE
In this
play we can see 8 characters.
- Mr J is
the director and the producer of the play. He is old. He has bad-temperament,
because he blames the actors for all the problems that they have. He loves
Teresa. He thinks that the play is going to be a disaster. He loves Beethoven’s
music, it calms down him.
- Goldberg
is a man who works to Mr J. He directs the play, too. He is tired of Mr J
orders. He is understandable, he understands the actors when they complain
about Mr J. At the end of the rehearsal he performs Jesus, because the actor
isn’t there. But Goldberg isn’t actor (as he says).
- Raamah is
a man who hates Mr J. He is a good actor, but he wants to leave the play in a
lot of moments. He performs Adan, Abraham and a soldier. He has a
bad-temperament, too. He makes an orgy with Masch, Jafet and Teresa.
- Masch is
a man who accepts all the things that Raamah says. He performs the snake in the
paradise, Sara (Abraham’s wife) and other crucified. He makes an orgy with
Raamah, Jafet and Teresa.
- Jafet is
a man who seems a child. He talks as he had a mental problem. He performs the
fumes at the beginning of the play, Isaac and the other crucified. He makes an
orgy with Raamah, Masch and Teresa.
- Mari is a
woman who is the cleaner of the stage. He is a current woman, who seems to be
poor. She talks to Goldberg a lot.
- Ernestina
is a woman who makes the decoration of the play. But she leaves the play
because Mr J doesn’t want to follow her indications.
- Teresa is
a beautiful woman. The actors love her, and she loves that the actors adore
her. She performs Eva (but she doesn’t want to be nude), and Maria Magdalena.
She loves sex. She makes an orgy with Raamah, Masch and Jafet. The same person,
who performs Teresa, performs a woman who forms part of the group Angeles Del
Infierno, a rock group.
SPACE
The play is
performs in the stage, that is the real stage without decoration. But the
actors go down to the audience in few times. Moreover, the characters appear
between the audience.
ILLUMINATION
At the
beginning of the play, all is dark. But in the course of it, there are a lot of
light: some focus that illuminates the stage, and sometimes focus that
illuminates the audience. And in the rows of the audience there are small
lights in the floor that sometimes illuminates, too.
WARDROVE
The clothes
in the play are very different. These clothes are the clothes that characters
in the play about Jesus wear. For example, Teresa, when performs Eva, wears a
dressing gown because she should be nude. Raamah wears underwear clothes when
he performs Adan, and clothes of a soldier when he performs a soldies… But Mr
J, Mari, Ernestina and Goldberg don’t change their clothes in the play, less
Goldberg when he performs Jesus at the end.
ATREZZO
In this
play we can see a lot of things that characters use. The decoration of the
“Variaciones” play is the real stage without any type of decoration, less a
table, one small lamp, the Bible and at the beginning of the play a panel where
we can see projected phrases. The decorations of the play about Jesus are
panels of wood which have in one side one decoration and in the other side
different decoration. But we can see other things that appear in Jesus’ play:
cuddly toys, a poster where we can see “PARADIS”, sheep make of card, two
umbrellas, a big cross, a cloth makes of different flags and some guitars and
other things that the group of rock use.
AUDITORIUM
In this
play the audience laughed a lot. It is a very funny play and we laugh a lot. There
are some scenes that are very funny and when they occur, people laugh a lot
(when Masch appears with a snake dress, very tight; when the orgy takes place;
when Raamah appears with underwear clothes; when Jafet makes the fumes…) At the
end all the audience applaud.
PERSONAL OPINION
In my
opinion this play is very funny because the audience laughs a lot in a lot of
scenes. But from my point of view it is a little confusing, because we can’t
understand because some actions pass or what the sense of some actions is. But
I recommend this play to people because it is good and amusing.
