PLOT

This is a series of events that occurred over several months from June to April narrated in the first person by the main character, Anthony. He related his monthly improvements after he abandoned alcohol and started going to ''Alcoholics Anonymous'' meetings. 

At one of these meetings, Anthony fell in love with a woman called Betsey. A prostitute since she was 14 years old, in part due to her step mother who kick her out of the house. Anthony was absolutely in Betsey's control and they started living with each other becoming vegetarians, going to the cinema and even to Christian concerts for time to time. However one day in January, Betsey decided to follow her grandmother's advice and go to the nursing school, breaking up with Anthony. 

Instead of feeling depressed, he tried to focus on his vegetarian diet but the loneliness soon caught up with him which provoked memories of when he saw his friend Eric Foot dying of a cardiac arrest outside a concert. 

In October he unexpectedly met Ginnie Foot, who was Eric's sister, and they started living together. Ginnie lost her boyfriend, Timmy Hughes, who was also a good friend of Anthony. Even though both Anthony and Ginnie loved each other, they didn't have a sexual relationship but more like a father-son type. In February Ginnie left him and he got a job as a copy editor. Although he was glad that Ginnie moved on to working in Kauai, he couldn't share the experiences he had with his old friends yet.
