Conclusion
The truth is that I’ve never read an hypertext before,
because I’m one of those person who think that the book is more interesting
than a screen…I prefered to feel the touch of the pages than to listen the
mouse click.
But here I am sitting on a confortable chair,
with my secreen and ready to start reading the text. The truth is that I’ve
never heard nothing about this hypertext, so I started to look to the title:
“Excerpts” so I knew from the beginning that
the hypertext wasn’t complete, an then the second part “From Victory Garden”. I
knew that this hypertext was written during the Gulf War, and maybe without
know it, with all the informacion given the reader could be situated perfectly.
I found very interesting that Stuart Moulthrop
can explore the war, maybe with a indirectly way, when the new are announced on
TV, when one men said that people must support the USA; or when a men survive
to the war, and want to live his life.
When I read this hypertext for the first time, there’s
one thing that surprise me;is that the story never ends, I mean it ends, but
with a different ending in the narratives.
Hypertext is a nonlinear texts, but its not
very difficult to get used to it, just one click and here you are, reading another
story, maybe related to the previous one, or maybe not.
I felt very connected with the author, I want
to say that, I had the “control”, the “power” to decide the story course. When I
had made the choise I thought “if I had pressed the other link and not this
one.What might happen?”
This things doesn’t happen when you read a book,
you can’t make choises, you must follow the story (lineal and directional).
This kind of texts (hypertext) are an open
door, to new kinds of literature and understanding. For example when I read “Excerpts
from Victory Garden” the first thing that I thought was that garden was a
methafor. I thought that, as USA has won the Gulf War, that garden was related
with the war. It was my first impression.
I suppose that the writter want to explore all
the war facets, using the characters, images and maps.
I guess I understand now why is this hypertext
so important and famous in the universities of the world. But its a pitty tha I
could haven’t access to the complete story.
