In this paper I´m going to compare
two poems of the same author. The first one is “ To Autumn”, that is written by
John Keats. It was written on September , 9. And the other one is Sleep and
Poetry” that is written also by John Keats in 1816. The two poems are talking
about the same thing. The description of a season and the beauty of nature. In
“To Autumn” the poet is describing ( as the title says) the Autumn, and in “
Sleep and Poetry” the poet is describing in the first stanza, beauty in summer.
My first
impresion reading the poem “ To Autumn” was that the poem was easy to read and
it can be understood by anyone, because it is talking about a common thing, and
the title gives us a clue to know what the poem is about. But in the other poem
by John Keats “ Sleep and poetry”, the title confused me because I thought that
the poem was about the time to sleep and that the poem was describing that
moment or describing a dream.
The poem “To Autumn” is divided in
three stanzas, each stanza is composed by eleven verses. In the first four
lines we have the rhyme a-b,a-b, but then the poet gives us a visual rhyme.
This type of rhyme appears in the three stanzas. In the other poem, the rhyme
is simple: a-a,b-b,c-c,... This poem “
Sleep and Poetry” is composed by eighteen stanzas, but I´m going to analyze the
first one. The vocabulary of the two poems is very simple, and so understable.
John Keats is using simple words and everyday language in both of them.
In the
first line of both poems, we have key words that help us to understand the
poem. In “ To Autumn” we have the word “ Season” that refers to Autumn. And in
“Sleep and Poetry” we have the keyword “summer”. This words introduces us to
the reading.
In the poem
“ To Autumn”, the first stanza is all the time describing this season. Talking
about usual things or usual images that happen in Autumn; “ later flowers for
the bees”, “ To bend with apples the moss´d cottage-trees”. Also describing the
beauty of the season in this words. The poet in the stanza is also describing
the season, but introduces a personification when he says: “ thee sitting
careless on a granary floor”. Also in the other poem by John Keats “Sleep and
Poetry” we have a personification in the line 7: “ More healthful than the
leafiness of dales?”.
In the last
stanza of “To Autumn” John Keats talks about the passing of time, and makes a
lot of references to the sound, with words like “music”, “choir”, “sing”....
In the
third part of the poem “To Autumn” the author is talking about the same thing,
but in “Sleep and Poetry” we can divide the first stanza in two parts, the
first one from the beginning to line 10, and the second part from line 11 to
the end of the first stanza. In the first part of this stanza, John Keats is
all the time making comparisons. The author is referring to the reader, is
talking directly and asking the reader a lot of questions to convince him/her
that there is nothing more beautiful. As it happens in the poem “ To Autumn”
John Keats is describing typical situations of the season in this poem. There
is a repetition of the word “More” to emphasize that feeling; “ What is
more....” “ More healthful than...”. The poet is using comparative terms.
CONCLUSION:
John Keats uses a personification in both poem. In the two poems it is important
that the author talks about typical situations that happen in each season to
describe the beauty of both of them. Most of the time referring to animals and
nature (landscape).
