In this paper I´m going to
analise the poem: “ The Lake Isle of Innisfreee”, that was published in “
1890,1892” by W.B. Yeats. I will explain some symbols and metaphors thar are
represented in the poem. But also I´m going to pay attention to the main theme
and the evolution of that main theme in the poem.
The poem “ The Lake
Isle of Innisfreee” by W.B. Yeats is divided into three stanzas. Each stanza
has four lines. The rhyme of the poem is ABAB, and we can notice that the
fourth verse of each stanza is shorter than the other ones.
First we have the title “ The
Lake Isle of Innisfree”. In the title we can see that the author is playing
with the words. If we see in the title the word “ Innisfreee”, it is only the
name of that lake isle, but if we pay attention and separate the words, we can
see: Inn-is-freee. The author wants to say that to be in that lake isle is
free. You don´t have to pay to be there. It is a place where the Inn is free
and everyone can travel to that place.
In the first stanza we have the first reference to Innisfreee. The
author says that he wants to be there. Also in that stanza the poet says: “ And
a small cabin build there” ( in line 2) and “ a hive for a honey-bee” ( in line
3). It is like the author wants to hide from something, not only to go there to
visit the place, but also to be apart from the world and to hide. Then in the
fourth line of the first stanza the author says “ And live alone in the
bee-loud glade”. He wants no company, no one to be near him, he wants to “live
alone”. There we have the main theme of the poem; peace. He wants to find that
place by living alone in a small cabin in the Lake Isle of Innisfreee. He wants
to be away from something. It is like he can´t find that peace and the only way
to find it is going there.
In the second stanza the author refers to the main theme for the first
time. In the first line of the second stanza we have the word “ peace”. And
when the author says: “ And I shall have some peace there” we can notice that
he is in another place. By now we don´t have information about where the author
is when he is talking in the poem. But we can know that he doesn´t have the
peace that he wants in the place that he is in that moment.
In the second
stanza, the author is making reference to nature, and is describing that place
and some situations that can make the reader make an idea of the environment of
Innisfreee like “ Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket
sings”, and with those words wants to make us travel to that Lake Isle and to
feel peace.
In the third stanza we have a crucial information. We know that the
author is “ on the roadway” or “ on the pavements grey”. We can easily supose
that he is in the city. In a place surrounded by noise and stress. A place that
has nothing in common with the Lake Isle of Innisfreee. And when the author
says: “ I hear it in the deep heart´s core” we notice that he really wants to
be there. Inside of him there is a place where he can go and escape from that
noise and stress of the city and find peace.
CONCLUSION: In my opinion the poem “ The Lake Island of Innisfreee” by
W.B. Yeats is a very good poem. It reflects perfectly the desire of one person to
escape from the daily rutine, the noise, the stress of the city and to run away
and find peace. I think that the third stanza reflecs perfectly that desire in
the way that inside of one of us we dream and we want that place.
