MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

CHARACTER ANALYSIS: HERO

INTRODUCTION

In this work we are going to take a look at the character of Hero in Much Ado About Nothing, one of the comedies written by William Shakespeare.

First of all, I chose Much ado about Nothing because I really enjoyed the play and also the film. Once I have chosen the play, I decided to analyse a feminine character because I think it is really interesting to study women’ situation at the time. In order to analyse that, I chose Hero. She is not my favourite character, by the way, but it calls my attention the way she acts and how the main important aspects surround her. But the main reason to analyse her is to understand and discover the words that she does not say or she is not allowed to say. Probably the audience feels more sympathy or identifies with Beatrice due to her vivid and spontaneous character, as in my case. May be she is easier to understand despite her witty speeches, because she says and expresses her feelings and her ideas, nevertheless, her cousin keeps always quiet but that does not mean that she does not think or feel, and that hidden thoughts are and what call my attention.  Moreover, I chose her because she is linked to the majority of main characters and because she invites to talk about many different aspects of that period.
