Lawrence’s life seems to confuse chronologically with what we can consider the period’s paradigm, of a literary movement that appears like one of the periods of major poetic and narrative splendour. This period is called the Modernism.
Lawrence’s life begin with the last Th. Hardy, naturalist and misanthropist
enragé, like the own Lawrence in his tortured relationship with England and its people.
There is a remarkable dose of didactics in Lawrence that him share with Shaw. Both also share the Fabianism and the root of the religious and social nonconformism.
We can fix Lawrence next to Conrad, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Ford Madox Ford, J.Joyce, V. Woolf, K. Mansfield. Alll of them belong to the modern movement.
It’s a speeded time historically: we can find the searing contradictions of the last victorianism, the irreparable fissure of the Empire’s lost, the death of the liberal England and the Modernism which is forming itself like a model of the weltanschaung of a period.
The English Modernism answer to a creation a posteriori of the literary history. The Modernism of Joyce, Eliot, Pound, Woolf, Lawrence present diferents propositions between them. We can observe that with a simple comparative lecture of the two generationals bildungsroman : A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Sons and Lovers.
The English Modernism appears the year 1922 more or less. This year appears two very important works: The Waste Land of T.S. Eliot and the Ulysses of J.Joyce.
We can also mention: Jacob´s Room of V. Woolf, The Enormous Room of E.E. Cummings, Aaron’s Rod of Lawrence and the Later Poems of Yeats.
The modernity
and the history are notions that their agents present like contradictories
since Nietzsche.
