CONTEXTO DE MACROESPACIOS

            CALIFORNIA ;

        I have begun writing before the California Figurative exhibition opens at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco next week. Am I in it? Of course not. They choose that asshole Bokker to curate it, and it is dominated by academics and SoCal carpetbaggers. Insulting to be overlooked once again in my own home territory and with so much hoopla. The newspaper actually called me to ask what I thought of the show. I told them, but I doubt if they will print it.

        For the record -- I am writing this for record although the phrase sounds funny -- in 1946, I had a little money from the government and a little that Luke had left me. So I went back to school, to the University of California at Berkeley -- We call it "Cal" although to everywhere else in the country it is Berkeley. There were veterens on the GI bill in my classes and of course young people, but I was the only woman over 25.
The real center then was across the Bay at CSFA, the California School of Fine Arts which is now the San Francisco Art Institute. Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Richard Deibenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, Jack Jefferson, Edward Corbett, James Budd Dixon, Frank Lobdell, Robert Howard and Jeremy Anderson -- they were all there around that time. Many were vets.
