CHARACTERS

In the play there five characters are described who are:

JIMMY PORTER

He is a young boy. He is twenty five years old. He is tall and thin. He is Alison's husband but he is a great male chauvinist, that is one of the main characteristics from this character. Due to this fact he does not treat his wife well. He is too sincere with himself, because he tells her a lot of bad things about women.

ALISON PORTER

She is Jimmy's wife. She is a tall, thin, white skinned woman and a young girl too. She has a timid character or maybe fearful because she does not dare saying to her husband that she is pregnant.

CLIFF LEVIS

He lives with Alison and Jimy in an attic. He is a white skinned man and a bit small. He has a good character and he does not like Jimmy. Cliff is very nice with Alison, he helps her but this does not like Jimmy.

HELENA CHARLES

She is an old friend of Alison. Firstly, she has some different with Jimmy.

CORONEL REDFERN

He is Alison's father. He is about 60 years old but he is attractive still.

SUMMARY

Jimmy is a man who is always complaining about the fact that every Sunday they do the same. He wants all of them to do what he desires. Therefore, he is always remembering the things that has been lost, so he blames to his wife why was happened.

Alison has a problem. She is pregnant but she does not know how to tell her husband. So Cliff helps her and both are frightened of Jimmy.

Alison's father convinces Alison to live with him. Alison writes a note to Jimmy and she gives it Helena who passes it to Jimmy. Alison goes out with her father. At the same time Helena goes to live with Jimmy. Alison decides to return. So Helena leaves Jimmy and Alison stays with Jimmy definitively.

SPACE

The play develops in an attic furnished with some armchairs, a bed and two wardrobes. It has a door and a window too. The house is in Midlands that is British region...

TIME

It is the present living of the characters. The play has three acts. The first one happens in an April morning. The seconds divided in two scenes, the first happens two weeks later and the second part happens the next afternoon. Finally, in the third act I think that there are two scenes too. The first starts some months later after the second month and the second some minutes later. The time seems not to pass because the time is continuing although there is some time between one act another.

LANGUAGE

The author writes prose. He uses a colloquial language. The main purpose is audience or the readers to understand what the author writes.

PERSONAL OPINION

In my opinion, the play reflects how the people are living the war. In this way with their actions and their dialogues, the play also represents the fear of some women towards their husband.
