SPACES AND DIALOGUES BY

HAROLD PINTER

In this paper I’m going to talk about the evolution of Harold Pinter, the topics that I’m going to compare are the spaces and the dialogues.

In his plays we can see an evolution when he wrote, sometimes things are written equal in his dialogues; on the other hand, he sometimes are very simple and monotonous where his words have never concrete meaning.

Therefore, we can find an evolution in these three plays: “ The dumb waiter” “The collection” and “Ashes to Ashes”. In the play “The dumb waiter”  there are two men in a room waiting for their victim. Here a social tension is reflected. Both of them are safe in this room. When they leave this one, they feel insure, they are afraid of the external world. Here the relation with the play “The room” is clear, also there are two people feeling safe staying in their space but they are frightened being out of it.

The collection” tells about a woman with problems who creates a real story about her life. This play cannot be understood very well.

“Ashes to Ashes” narrates that a woman who imagines a new reality for herself. This play is more confusing than “The Collection”. The common point in them is that both main characters have problems, what makes them ignore their environment, that is, their own living reality.

The main point considered in Harold Pinter’s plays is his stages in a room, where the characters feel well; sure... on the contrast they are afraid outside a concrete closed space that is on open space.

His plays are mainly projected by his not many characters on stage. Always there are two or three people whose dialogues are long. The content is referred to the past, his past. For example, in the play “Ashes to Ashes” there is not a good communication.

Harold Pinter expresses in his plays the war years. This characters attitudes show this war world as their insecurity. In the political way each person is evolved by his or her own living experiences but each person is not equal as the other one, also the political environment.

So the war years society are inside Pinter’s plays.

Harold Pinter makes obvious his characters horror, due to the emotion feeling inside the reader, this emotion is owner of these characters.

His plays show an evolution from his places, firstly they were rooms but late they are open spaces but they always have fear to go out.

The dialogues, firstly, sometimes had not coherent dialogue and they were a lot of silences where there were nothing. In his next plays there are fewer silences but we can think what is happening at that moment because the characters are doing something, we can see this on the marginal notes.

I think that Harold Pinter leaves in his plays a free interpretation to the audience.
