Ben Vrackie rises above Pitlochry to the height of 2757ft and gives not only
excellent views of the surrounding mountains but also a very pleasant walk
through some typical Scottish moorland scenery.
The walk can be started from either Pitlochry or Moulin, but it is worth
remembering that the car park at Moulin is very small and, on busy days, it
would be wiser to leave your vehicle in Pitlochry.
Starting from Pitlochry, follow the A924 road to Moulin (a distance of under
a mile) and turn left at the Moulin Inn. Follow the road until the small car
park is reached. The path is clearly marked here through the trees lining a
small burn, until it reaches a deer fence at the edge of the moor over which
there is a stile.
The path on this track is generally well trodden and the going is relatively
easy, if a little damp in places, and steep in the final ascent. Along the
route you cross some truely bleak landscape without leaving civilisation too
far behind! You should see at least one of the financial assets of the area,
the red grouse, which is common here. Watch also for Red Deer along the
hillsides.
On the summit there is a horizontal dial indicating those hills which are
visible from that point, including Ben Lawers, Schiehallion, the Cairngorms
and Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh.
As with all hill climbs, try to pick a clear day, as low cloud will
obliterate your view. In spite of the accessibility of the mountain from
Pitlochry, the safety precautions and equipment required for mountain walks
are just as essential as on more isolated hills - weather conditions can
change just as quickly here.
