"Black Spout" is a waterfall, in total around 150ft, pleasantly situated in a
small gorge on the Edradour burn. The route to and from it takes you through
a variety of mixed woodland and passes many places of beauty. There are a
number of benches provided where you can relax and enjoy this romantic spot.
From the East Moulin road, start along Tomcroy Terrace. When this road ends
you should turn right and, after a few yards, a gate will open on the
opposite on to a field on your left. Walk to the gate on the opposite side of
this field and follow the path which then descends to a bridge across the
tree-lined Kinnaird burn; then turn right, through another gate and into the
next field. The path becomes a little indistinct here, but you should head
towards the wood diagonally across the field before you where you will find a
stile over the boundary fence. The route now becomes more obvious once again.
Follow the path through the wood, across the dirt road and onwards, keeping
the cottages to your left. There you will find a signpost to the Black Spout
and, if you continue on the path, you will reach an exciting viewing platform
which projects out above the hills.
From here there are two options. You can turn left again up the burn, cross
the bridge and follow the path through the farm buildings ahead to join an
unnumbered road at Milton of Edradour and the Edradour Distillery - open to
the public and well worth a visit. You can then turn right, past Donavourd,
to join the old A9, then turn right again to reach Pitlochry (it should be
noted that this road can be very busy and would not be suitable for animals
or small children).
Alternatively, cut right across from the viewing platform at the fall
(ignoring the path down to the burn) and carry on until you reach the dirt
road. Follow this for about 300yds before striking off left, following the
signpost to Pitlochry. This leads to another footbridge over the Kinnaird
burn, just below the Athol Palace Hotel; turn left after the bridge and keep
on until you reach Knockfarrie Road. This will take you back towards the
town centre.
