1946 à He was born in Leicester, England on January 19.

 

1957 - 1964 à He was educated at the City of London School.

 

1968 à He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, from which he graduated in modern languages (with honors).

 

1969 - 1972 à He worked as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary supplement.

 

1977 à He began working as a reviewer and literary editor for the New Statesmen and the New Review.

 

1979 - 1986 à He worked as a television critic, first for the New Statesmen and then for the Observer (London).

 

1981 à He won The Somerset Maugham Award (Metroland ).

 

1984 à Booker Prize nomination (Flaubert's Parrot).

 

1985 à He won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize.

 

1986 à He won the Prix Médicis and the E. M. Forster Award (American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters).

 

1987 à He won the Gutenberg Prize.

 

1988 à He won the Grinzane Cavour Prize (in Italy) and he was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

 

1992 à He won the Prix Femina (Talking It Over).

 

1993 à He won the Shakespeare Prize by the FVS Foundation.

 

1995 à He was made an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

 

1998 à Booker Prize nomination (England, England).

 

2004 à He was made a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and won the Austrian State Prize for European Literature.

 

2005 à Booker Prize nomination (Arthur & George ).
