Abstract:

This essay discusses Malcolm Lowry´s Under the Volcano . Analyzing this polyedric novel, several aspects must be taken into account. Basically a reflection about the search for beauty, knowledge and redemption in the fall of Lowry´s main character. The hero´s fall and self-destruction is -since Daedalus and Prometheus- one of the major themes in the history of Literature. Love and death are the two big wheels this novel spins around. As in classical dramas, death is foreseen through a wide range of predictive symbols. Formally Under the Volcano is one of the most important attempts to reflect an alcoholic perception and experience. Finally Under the Volcano is a novel of commitment, a manifesto against fascism and violence.
Last but not least, it would be interesting to discuss the role that WWW can play as a parallel space to vindicate Lowry and some other damned writers.
