        When the first two volumes of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman were published, they became a huge success in England. These volumes contained great comic creations, satiric attacks, irony, formal innovation, free digressions and interruptions. In fact, Sterne’s masterpiece broke away from the early conventions of the novel, confusing its readers expectations.
        Thus, the aim of this research project is to shed a bit of light on the reader by means of a detailed analysis of the work and the narrative technique employed by the author. Also, to describe how Sterne's work greatly benefited and changed the literary style of novels in the 18th century. Finally, in order to get an overview of the author and his time, I will conduct a study of Sterne's life, his other works, writers who influenced him, criticisms on his literary output and any other aspects related to Tristram Shandy.
