Analysis of the chapter 1

 

The name of this chapter is “men commune secretly with the trees”. Here, she try to show the shape of  Pandanus genus( tree of  New Guinea) , to situate it geographically and to compare it with the female body. There is a clear pejorative use of the word “woman” because of the issue of Jamison and the rite: “Women can cultivate sweet potatoes so well because they have no 'stick'.
They cannot climb trees because they have a cunt, and a big arse”.

There are 3 colourful illustrations in which we can see the tree, its roots an its fruit. To remember the fruit, Sonya Rapoport says that it resembles a pinneaple, so the images in this first page help us to understand the process that later will be explained.
