DEFINITIONS

Shibboleth:

It is something that gives you a way to know where someone is from.

(Cambridge Advanced Learner’s dictionary  definition)

1 FORMAL a belief or custom that is not now considered as important and correct as it was in the past:
They still cling to many of the old shibboleths of education.

2 a word, phrase, custom, etc. only known to a particular group of people, which you can use to prove to them that you are a real member of that group.

 

Layperson:

(Class definition)

A person who’s not an expert.

(Cambridge Advanced Learner’s dictionary  definition)

Someone who is not trained in or does not have a detailed knowledge of a particular subject.

 

Diachronic:

Relating to the way a language has developed over time.
