INTERNAL SPACE
This story is distributed in sequences. There is only one sequence
which refers to the present, the action which was happening at the
moment. The rest of the sequences refer to the protagonist’s memories
in the past.
Now, I’m going to enumerate the references to internal space:
- “Scratchy green board”: it appears at the beginning of
this story. Laura was on it.

- “She has broken water”: this expression shows us that
she jumped to the pool.
- “On the side”: her parents where on the side of the
pool watching her.
- “Utica”: Mr and Mrs Cooley were from this place.
- “They stand on the grass”: the place where her family
were watching her.
- “The white bubbles bubbling up”: another
expression that shows us that Laura jumped.
- “The hot car home and then a barbecue in their fenced-in
yard”: they went home but they didn’t stay inside. They are in
a fenced-in yard.
- “A new summer pool”: we are in another sequence in a
new pool.
- “Upstairs to the changing room toilet”: it is
the place where Laura takes her brother to go to the toilet.
- “On the balcony, between the ladie’s room and the
men’s”: is the place where Laura waits her brother.
- “Old pool”: Laura compares the new pool with the old
pool.
- “Laura goes with her brother up the long gray
staircase”: is the place where the changing room toilet is.
- “In Germany”: Laura studied and lived at this place.

- “Turkish baths”: there weren’t pools, so Laura went
to the Turkish baths.

- “Baby pool”: is a pool next to the “new pool”.

- “In his flat”: this flat is the American G.I.’s
flat.
- “At an outdoor table”: Laura and the American G.I.
were together in Munich.
- “In Laura’s friend tiny studio”: Laura has a
friend in Germany and they live together.
- “They leave the path and go out onto the short dark
grass”: they are on the grass at the high school.

- “In high school where you lay on the hard gymnasium
floor”: it refers at the same high school where Laura and her friend
stay in Germany.
- “Church day”: with this expression, the author shows
us that they went to the church.

- “In college she will live in a double dorm room”:
Laura was imagining her new life.
- In Laura’s friend’s studio on a futon on the hard wood
floor”: it is the description of the place where Laura and her
friend live.
- “To the wall”: the wall in the Laura’s friend’s
studio where a clock is situated.
- “In the Munich school”: the place where Laura studied.
- “Against the wall and the edge of the kitchen table”:
the place where Laura and her man live.
- “In a doctor’s waiting room”: they were in a hospital in
Germany.
