         First paper

Title of the paper : “Keats’ Nightingale: Beauty and Death at the same instant”

Author: Keats, John

Abstract : The aim of this paper is to analyse the poem “Ode to a Nightingale” by John Keats. First of all I will study its form and its content to do a reflection on the meaning of the literary figure of the Nightingale and of the other meanings the poet tries to express in his Ode, or what I think he tries to. Later on I will put the poem in relation with Keat’s life and his other works and  with the historical context in which he lived, to end with a commentary of the poem’s relevance and validity in our days.

                                                                                              Second paper

Title of the paper:  “A Victorian Woman’s portrait through the eyes of who is looking at her”

Topic: Women as Subject in Victorian Art: Representations of Women

Abstract: When asked to give a paper I thought it might be interesting to offer some observations on the representations of women in the English Art of the Victorian era, and specifically, on their election depending on the sexual genre of the author. I did not intend to carry out a detailed analysis of this extense issue, but simply to indicate some facets and accents of it which have caught my attention. What follows, then , is rather than a fully study of the wide subject of the portrait of Victorian Women in art, a reality which itself is a tremendous complexity, a way to deepen in the women’s representation but looking for a thought on the trascendency of art and its role in the genre question.

Auto-evaluation: Thinking about the subject at this moment, when we are getting to an end, which is, actually, a short stop in the middle of the way, and about my work during that time and its results, its consequences, I have the impression that I have worked in a continuous way since the first day, but, most importantly, I have found motivation while I was working and reading, which for me is the most important thing, over all in a difficult and almost unknown literary genre for me from which I was afraid, until that moment. But at the end, I have learned to enjoy poetry, and, thus, Poetry, the subject itself. I know this is just  the beginning, and I am aware that i could have work harder, which is always possible. But, as I have said, that is just a pause.

Analizing my work in the two papers, I think in the first one I didn’t spend the time needed to do it, and the result was a paper disorganized in its form and content.  However, this time, not only had I have more time to prepare it, but also a clearer idea of what to do and how to do it. That’s why probably I have enjoyed more this second paper, because I was aware of my freedom of choice, and I have had the possibility to choose the issue that I like most. Nevertheless, I have the feeling that I have left the poetry world and entered a more general one, that of all arts, which may be too far away from our subject.
