Dramatis personae:
Papá Ubú: Skin head. He speaks in a funny way changing the words, like for
instance he says mierdra instead of mierda. He makes a whole new
lexicon. He wears a silly shirt that is too short for him and shows a bit of
his bally. On top he wears a waistcoat and a big brown Jacket. His
behaviour is sometimes like the one of an animal, especially when he eats
but also at other times. He is greedy and doesn’t mind to kill to get what
he wants.
Mamá Ubú: Dark hair woman, wears a red dress with a wide round neck. She
behaves like a prostitute, she is vulgar and she walks dragging one of her
legs in a funny way.
Memnón: Long hair, he is a bit effeminate. He wears black. He is ambitious but he
acts cowardly.
Monarca: A despotic military man. Has an American accent. He speaks very loud.
most of the time. He is funny sometimes
Mandamás: He is medium age, dark long hair. Dresses and talks like a reach
South American land owner.
Pueblo: Dresses like a poor man with old greyish coloured clothes. He acts as a
beggar sometimes and as revolutionary at another times.
Palotín: We can only see its arms and its face coming out through the timber
framework that is in the background of stage. He hardly speaks. We can
only hear a rumour at the back.
Soldado: Wears uniform. It is quiet impersonal. When he is under supervision he
obeys all the orders immediately. When he is left alone without
supervision he is primitive and daft.
Alto cargo del partido: She wears smart clothes and speaks like politicians do.
Juez: She wears a robe. She hardly speaks
Nobles: She wears smart clothes and acts a though she has been outraged.
Conciencia: He just wears a napkin. He speaks softly and nicely as though talking to
a child. Always bringing out the best aspects of a human behaviour. Bailarina Tatana: young good looking woman, wears a green figure-hugging dress.
She doesn’t speak.
Archeopterix : It is a huge baby who doesn’t speak.
Plot
Is all about a tyrant an all he has to do to keep his power. He kills, manipulates and lies all the time.
Space
It is an empty space with a timber framework that is at the back of the stage that comes and goes. It all takes place on the same scenario, the intimate moments of Papá and Mamá Ubú, the apparition of the mandamás with his soldados, the revolution of the pueblo. The difference of scenario comes more with the actors and their ways than with the scenario in itself.
Lightings
The darkness marks the pass from one act to the next one. It is a quiet dark scenography. It only increases in light intensity at certain moments. The predominant colour is red.
Atrezzo
It is quiet minimalist since it is an empty space. There are only few objects on stage. Mainly a wide rounded piece of pipe painted in red that is Ubú’s toilet but it also is where Mamá Ubú gives birth to Archeopterix and putted vertically where all the altos cargos and others are executed. There is also a kind of throne. There is nothing else as atrezzo.
Room atmosphere
People laughs very often.
Opinion
I quiet enjoyed the performance since I like the way they satirize the figure of a dictator. It is a funny way to denounce all the injustice that they are able to create. I really liked that they created a new lexicon to mock all the bureaucracy and hypocrisy in the political world. The actors did very well. I like this way of doing theatre.
