RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

  • Department of Molecular Physics at Fritz Haber Institut of the Max Planck Society (Berlin), Germany
    from November 2007 to present
Postdoc in the group of Prof. Dr. Karsten Horn. During this period, I performed the necessary steps to run a 5 kelvin STM machine (Createc) and a variable temperature STM machine (Specs) in which semiconductor surfaces were prepared and characterized.by STM and STS (Scannig Tunneling Spectroscopy) in order to study the adsorption of potential precursors for the formation of graphene layers, such as coronene and hexabenzocoronene. On Ge(111) and Ge(100), the adsorption and self-assembling of coronene was studied. On Si(111), the rich array of electronically inequivalent reaction sites of the (7x7) reconstruction was investigated with respect to molecular adsorption. This work is also the main core of a diploma thesis presented on January 2009 by a diploma student under my supervision. Other studies includes the growth and characterization of boron nitride layers on Cu(111) by STM and electronic structure of graphene on Rhodium by means of ARPES..

  • Department of Condensed Matter Physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Madrid), Spain
from September 2002 to October 2007
PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Enrique García Michel. During these years I performed several experiments in ultra high vacuum to investigate the electronic structure of metallic surfaces with low dimensional substructures (halogenated Pt(110), reconstructions of Sn and Pb on Cu(100) and stepped Cu(100) surfaces), by means of angle resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (ARUPS). The photoemission experiments were performed using synchrotron radiation at different European facilities all along the following beamtimes:

    • At the undulator beamline APE, Sincrotrone ELETTRA, Basovizza (Italy): from October, 2nd to 13th 2003, from December, 10th to 19th 2004, from October, 6th to 17th 2005 and from September, 23rd to October, 2nd 2006. The end station of this beamline is equipped with a Scienta SES-2002 analyzer for high energy and angular resolution photoemission spectra.

    • At the bending magnet beamline BL33, MaxLab, Lund (Sweden): from March, 15th to 31st 2003, from April, 30th to May, 17th 2004 and from June, 19th to July, 4th 2005.

Besides these beamtimes, I used an UHV chamber equipped with ARUPS10 analyzer at home lab with a high flux He plasma lamp.

I did scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STM) using a variable temperature Omicron in the Centro Atómico de Bariloche, San Carlos de Bariloche (Argentina) in March 2006 with Dr. Hugo Ascolani.

I have also experience in the analysis of surface crystallography data through the surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD) experiment performed to determine the atomic structure and the nature of the phase transition induced with the temperature observed in the system Sn/Cu(100). In order to analyze the crystallographic data, I developed several programs in Igor script language, which include novel strategies for multidimensional fits (Genetic Algorithm). I was involved in the SXRD experiment, done at beamline ID03 in the E.S.R.F. facility, Grenoble (France) from February, 13th to 24th 2003.

I also studied the modifications of electronic structure of Cu(110) by adsorption of planar aromatic polyacenes like pentacene and tetracene, which form a long range self-assembly on the surface and the possible implication of the electronic structure in the formation of such networks. In this area, I performed three synchrotron experiments:

    • At the undulator beamline APE, Sincrotrone ELETTRA, Basovizza (Italy): from April, 10th to 20th 2005 and from March, 23rd to April, 3rd 2006.

    • At the bending magnet beamline BL33, MaxLab, Lund (Sweden): from May, 22nd to June, 5th 2006.

and I studied the different molecular configurations by means of STM experiments in the Donostia International Physics Center, San Sebastián (Spain) from July, 23rd to August, 6th 2006 with Prof. Dr. Enrique Ortega.

I was also involved in the study of the electroncic structure of C60 and C70 on Au(887) (vicinal Au(111)) by means of ARUPS and NEXAFS. For this subject, I participated in two beamtimes:

    • At the undulator beamline SIS-HRPES, SLS, Villigen (Switzerland): February 2005, one week.

    • At the bending magnet beamline 9.3.2, ALS, Berkeley (U.S.A.): January 2007, one week.

In all this period, besides being involved in the montage of part of the home lab system (plasma He lamp with monochromator and special manipulator), I was developing several procedures in the script programming language of Igor Pro for analysis of photoemission spectra, fitting of crystallographic data and processing LEED pictures and STM images. I am also author of the Igor Pro utility LaTeXinIGOR for embedding mathematical expressions using LATEX as the editor (see Others).

  • Department of Applied Mathematics at the Universidad de Murcia (Murcia), Spain
from September 2000 to August 2002
Master of Science in Applied Mathematics. Using geometrical methods (differential geometry) I studied the quantization of dynamical systems. In particular, I applied the algebraic quantization formalism to the Electromagnetic Gauge Group. Additionally I studied the stability of particular solutions in the three-dimensional Hènon-Heiles family. For such studies I frequently used the programming capabilities and symbolic calculus of the program Mathematica.
