consonant noun
A basic speech sound in which the breath is at least partly obstructed and which can be combined with a vowel to form a syllable. Contrasted with vowel . • a letter representing a consonant.

diphthong noun
Meaning a speech sound in which the articulation changes from one vowel to another, as in coin, loud , pain , spoke , etc., is spelt with - ph- and should be pronounced dif- , not dip- . Diphthongs are a common feature of English pronunciation.
