The Shakespeare Society of Japan

We now move to another group of websites. This time the creator is not a single person but an official organization. As you might see, the site has an English version that is practically equivalent to the original in Japanese. As it can be read in the OUTLINE link of the English version, the Society was founded in 1929, and aims to promote Shakespeare studies in Japan and overseas. The membership is basically open to any person interested in the playwright or Elizabethan drama in general. The Society holds events of different scale, one of the greater ones being a World Shakespeare Congress that gathered more than 700 delegates form over 40 different countries.

Both, the English and the Japanese page, have a very simple structure, with an index link with sections such as outline, news, events, publications, etc. The aim of this website is to provide information about the existence of the Society, its history and organization, events, list of publications and activities related to Shakespeare rather than offering actual data about the playwright or his works. In other words, it is an introductory website as an internet representation of an organization which has offices with a physical existence in Tokyo.

Finally, it is necessary to say that the website has been renewed recently. The web address has changed as well as the appearance. However, the contents and the structure have not suffered any major change. For the curious reader, please press here for the new Japanese version and here for the new English version.
