The play is made up by three characters: Joan,
Todd and Harper.
Joan grows up during the play. She is the
Harper’s niece and she likes Todd. When she is a girl she wants to know why
happens everything, she wants an explanation of
everything.
Harper is the aunt of Joan. She lives in a
country house and she is married.
Todd is a young man who works making hats. In
this work is where he meets Joan.
Joan is the the niece of Harper. She is
going to stay a few days to her aunt’s house. The first night she can’t sleep and she
goes to talk to her aunt. Joan has discoveredsmething that has completely frozen
and confused. She tells that she
had heard the groan of a person. She decided to go down using a tree as a
ladder. Being there, she saw his uncle in a shelter with more people. Kids and
adults, covered of blood. There was a lorry too. She decided to go down of his
hiding place and, without being seen, she looked at what was happening. On the
lorry was people crying and in the shelter his uncles was hitting a man and a
child with a stick.
His aunt hearing that, was a bit surprised.
After trying to betray her saying that it was a party, she decides to tell her
the truth, but it was a secret and nobody should know it. She told her that her
uncles was helping people who was running away and the blood was before met
them. And he was hitting the two people because they were treacherous.
In the second act we can see Joan and her
friend Todd working together makin hats. Each day they made them more
beautifuls.
In the third act, after a few years, the action occurs at Harper’s home
again. Here they have a long conversation Tood and Joan’s aunt. Finally, Joan
appears(she was sleeping) and the aunt tells them that it is not secure to stay
there and it is better they leave the house.
The play occurs in various places: one is the
house of the aunt of Joan and then there is also the place where Todd and Joan
work making hats.
In this play, there are years, it ‘s divided in
three acts: the first when Joan is a girl and she is in the house of her aunt,
the second in the place where they work, and the last in the house of Harper.
The play has a cronology order with hops in the
years, and it is shown how the girl
grows up.
This play is written in prose, with a language
a litle bit dificult to understand.
Personal opinion
This is other strange and confusing play. The
play starts, and it seems interesting, in the part when it talks about the uncle
of Joan, who is hiting somebody, but we never will know what was going on,
because the story changes and Joan grows up, and in my opinion the play goes
boring and not interestin.
I don’t know the purpose of the author in this play, I sure that it has
to have one and very important, but I coudn’t see it.
