BYRONISM: INFLUENCES, CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPORTANCE

1.Introduction (by Julia Fernández Chiva and Beatriz Lasala Díaz)

In this paper we are going to talk about Lord Byron focusing on the influences of his life in his poetry, some features of his poems and finally the influence he had on other authors.

First of all we will talk about the influences on Byron. There are some moments in his life that influenced on his poetry. One of the most important influences was his early experience in life, because of this we can find melancholy and a feeling of repugnance against life in his poems.

Another influence is his early readings. He didn’t like to read books for children, he read classics as Don Quixote or The Book of One Thousand and One Nights and he also read the Bible, because of this he began to worried about the problem of predestination at the early age of five or six.

His works were also influenced by his travels around Europe. He visited Spain and he fell in love with this country since we can find some references to Spain in his poetry.

Secondly, we can find three relevant features in Byron’s poetry: melancholy, a feeling of repugnance against life and, the most important one, his Byronic Hero. We can see some examples in this paper

Finally we are going to focus on the influences Byron has on other authors. Byron has been an inspiration for many authors around the world and not all of them were coetaneous of his period like Keats and Shelley, but his poetry also influenced later artists, one example is Edgar Allan Poe.
