Conclusion
Analyzing
the use of dimensions in the story “Datafeeds” by Deena Larsen was very
interesting. Larsen created a main character who is not satisfied with her
current situation and wants change but in the end it turns out that she prefers
the well-known instead of coping too intensively with new situations. First,
Jane wants to see and not only to hear, second she also wants to feel. She then
realizes that it is not always the best to understand the feelings of everyone
else and wants to go back to a world where only the spoken word counts.
I think it is quite
interesting that Larsen chose to set the same plot in three different
dimensions where the clumsiness and nescience of the main character influences
the different outcome of the same situation. When I started reading the text I did
not know where it would lead to and I was unsure about keep on reading. I read
the text following the numeration of the chapters in the hope of getting a structured
access to the story and I am quite happy about doing it that way. With that I
was able to understand the first dimension as the home dimension of the main
character where she feels comfortable and secure. On this basis it was much
easier to follow the second and third dimension where the protagonist feels
uneasy, makes mistakes and acts a little bit clumsy. I was mostly strucked by
the last two sentences of the last part: Even so, I long for a
simpler existence, one where we could sometimes shield our bodies. A minimalist datastream
where what was said was all that mattered. I could not imagine in a world where my innermost feelings are
accessible to everyone – due to my heartbeat. However, I do not agree with what was said was all that mattered
because in my opinion body language is a basic and very important skill of
communication – as long as one has the ability of seeing.
Nevertheless, I really
enjoyed working with “Datafeeds” because it encourages thinking about what is
important and what do I really want to know from the people around me?
