PERFORMANCE MODULES
RIII
Arden Producciones
The representation of RIII took place on Thursday, 3rd of November, 2005 at L’Altre Espai theatre.
The cast was formed by RICHARD by Juan Carlos Garés, REINA ELISABETH( Amparo Vayá), BUCKINGHAM (Carol Linuesa), RATCLIFF (Vicente Pastor), LADY ANNE (Esther López), CLARENCE/ RICHMOND (Ismael Carretero), HASTINGS (Chema Cardeña), REINA MARGARET( Laura Useleti).
The play is based on the universal Shakespeare’s Richard III play.
The space is undefined, we don’t see any house, castle, etc…. only that we are on England.
On the stage we don’t see any landscape, only the performer who is acting and the rest of the cast remains in a second line, in the dark and immobile. Richard is the main character and also the narrator; he presents the other characters and can interrupt the play to opine or make quotations.
The atrezzo consists in a throne( for the king), a bathtub( where Clarence is killed), a big cross(where Richard makes a discourse) and some little objects which belong to Richard(a blanket, a bucket, etc….).
The sound track has worrying music, with wolf grunts that refer to a kind of “psychosis” and fears that Richard suffers.
Richard is a deformed and embittered man, who is envious watching his brother in the power. In the meantime, he is in the dark, planning how to get the power and arrive to the throne. To achieve this plan, he will have the help of Ratcliff, a ruthless servant, who will be able to kill, and also to die to obtain a great reward.
In a country in peace, Richard will manipulate all the people who have influence in the court, like Buckingham, a man without qualms, who will help him for a county.
On the other side, we see Clarence, his brother, who is going to be killed by Ratcliff in the bath, by this way, he will be out of the Richard’s way.
An important character is Queen Margaret, the defeated queen, who has lost her husband and his son, and who during the whole play will warn Richard and all his family about the risks of his plan, and the revenge they will receive, formed by a lot of disgraces.
When the Queen Elizabeth is thrown out by Richard, he marries Lady Anne and is proclaimed king. He will break the peace, and the people who has been at his side, want to collect the rewards. This fact will provoke tensions between them.
A new civil war is coming, and Richard, plenty of hate, prepares the battle, but after a few days of war, he will see like people abandon him, and Ratcliff will continue beside him until he will be killed.
Richard has noticed his alone, his horse has gone, he only has the kingdom, he is the king but his death is imminent. Here appear the fears, the worrying feelings, and, at the end his death, he dies hurt by a lot of arrows, and we hear the famous phrase:
“A horse, my kingdom for a horse”. GESTAS DE PAPÁ UBÚ>>>>>>>
