WOMEN WRITERS

VIRGINIA WOOLF

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was educated in a very good cultural circle. She was literary critic and also novelist. V. Woolf and James Joyce are the most important novelists who introduced the "Interior Monologue"- the stream of consclousness techique. In her novels, Virginia Woolf does not use plot, neither caracterization in a traditional sense. She wanted to use every captation possibility an she used to take in account all the literari genres. Woolf is an excellent writer with a large amount of evocation posibilities nearly without describing the characters. We have not got any reason to say that Virginia Woolf was a feminist writer, but we can apreciate in her novels that all their main characters are women. Posibly this fact is not deliberated. But personally, I think that the fact that a woman always uses women in her novels reflect an impact of Patriarchy in Literature. I think that this influence is possible because, since the woman has been always omited in certain situations of society, hopping that a woman wants to foreground the figure of the woman is obvious. We can see that in Woolf's novels the woman is presented in her relationship with the others. In "the Voyage Out"(1915), for instance, we see Rachel Vinrace who dies when she is near to see her dreems accomplished. In another novel, "Nigh and Day" the main character (also a girl) is presented with all her worries. Normally, we see in Woolf's novels that the main character (a woman) has internal problems and sometimes she is not able to expres them. So, I would say that this psychological problems are a reflect of the author. We can relate this fact with Abrams theory about the aspects of literature: In this case, the author can be identifyed with the text, but at the same time she can be related with the audience (they have similar worries), and ... why not?, with reality.
