Shibboleth

 

 formal a belief or custom that is not now considered as important and correct as it was in the past

They still cling to many of the old shibboleths of education.

Layperson

 

someone who is part of a religious organization but who is not paid or specially trained

 

Synchronic

 

adj.  Relating to a language as it is at a particular point in time.
