PERSONAL OPINION

My decision to do this work of Charles Dickens crossed my mind when reading Great Expectations. I liked very much this novel and I found in it quite similarities and connections with Jane Eyre, another important book that I had already read before. That is why I decided to make a comparative essay of the two books, although I knew it was not a very easy task. Even now, I am not sure if I have been able to shape what I wanted to say.
At this section of my work, I would like to point out that I would have liked to read more about Charles Dickens and his works, but I have not had enough time to do so.
To make this kind of essay on Charles Dickens, I have read some of the books i have named in the references, at the end of each page. I must add that I have also seen on the screen the two novels studied in this work, that is, Great Expectations and Jane Eyre. It is pointless to say that the movies, although not too bad done, do not become to be as good as the books.
The first thing I did when I started this work was to read the books by Charles Dickens wchich I considered more emblematical: David Copperfield and Oliver Twist. Then, I was able to see which were the most striking features of their characters. While I was reading Dickens´ book, I realized of his obsesive idea for the victimized child, set in a Victorian society full of perejudices. It is obvious to see some aotobiographical aspects in his novels, above all when he talks about the orphan children who have nothing in life but sufferings. To make this clear, I have included a brief biography of the writer.
The raw reality with wchich Dickens showed the peopleand the time he had to live with has been one of the things that most impressed me. To soften the cruelty with which his orphan characters were treated, he included some aspects of the folk and fairy tales. He also was a great caricaturist and, as a kind of painter, he contrived some humorous strokes when he wanted to ridicule any character.
Among the many virtues as writer, Dickens has one that I do not like at all. I am referring to the way he treats his female characters. Women are often seen as unhuman beings without no heart at. The only time  that Dickens tries to give them some real features, then these seem to be quite negative. To see this, we have the example of Estella in Great Expectations: she is the embodiment of evil. Perhaps this sad vision of woman as the incarnation of the devil is due to his own many sentimental failures, which, at some extent is understandable-
To sum up, I would like to finish saying one more time that Charles Dickens was a remarkable figure at his time not only for his condition of writer  but also for his great personality as a man.
