KEYWORDS
(through an analysis of the terms we can imagine the whole structure)
BODY: it is seen as a bargaining chip, her means of obtaining money, sometimes an enemy to which she has not yet been accustomed to and a piece of her privacy that she did not want to sell unless needed. Inhibition is a consequence of the relation between her inner self and her appearance: ot separating it she reacts as in a violation of her privacy. Professional models use their nudity as a mask where they hide behind: they show no personality, their bodies are they sole and complete meaning, as Barthes would remark.
INDEPENDENCE: every growing young will start at some time seeking it. She looks for it at any price from the moment she has been left in Israel, where she learns the despair of being tied up.
SOLITUDE: independence entails loneliness, another of her enemies. She cannot manage herself properly and needs a support, which will find in placebos (antidepressants, eating...)
BULIMIA: a result of her lack of control over her life. Her overfeeding leads her to an extensive vomiting because she has a need of cleansing (not only physical -her body hurts- but also emotional, given that bringing up the food eliminates the proofs, the guilt).
PLEASURE: distinguisable between pleasure for men and for women. For her, masturbating is a simple action that does not involve the erotism that porno images have. These images are directed to the male satisfaction and show a wrong picture of the feminine sexuality. She learns about these conventions in the photographers' studios.
GENDER ROLE: or, more specifically, what is expected of a woman. Passiveness, respect to phallocentric rules, modesty and standing in a secondary level. Because of this inferiority, women are in need of/are able to sell themselves as objects (sometimes figuratively, as when she uses her dress to impress men).
POWER: the contradiction of this term for females consists in the establishmente of two different powers: one, rejected for them, the economical, political and business power, and the power of their bodies to attract males, that rule over the former outlook. Since she has got an appealing figure, she is able to persuade, at first innocently, the “powerful” men to concede her favors, a job.
INFIDELITY: in a Christian society couples consist in the formalization of a relationship between a man and a woman, without any interference and for a lifetime: in theory. The practice says otherwise: married men often take lovers by boredom or to express their power position, and is not seen badly as if it were a woman.
FUTURE: linked with her objectives: a man, a job; it means the realization of her interests, highly conditioned by what society teaches, and derived from her experiences. Her future is blurred because she has attained nothing and chained herself to a past, a memory. In this past, she did expect of her man to abandon everything for her, irrationally, and inventing a lie that suits her low-esteem.
MAN: synonym of stability for her. A man is a realization of the social values for a woman, a necessary complement. Specifically, to our protagonist means a kind of warden or solution to a life without purpose.
