Title of the paper : The countryside in Howards End

Author : E.M.Forster

Abstract or summary of the research :

When I started studying Sspanish literature , one of the literary movements that interested me more was that called: “ La Generación del 98 ”. This literary movement arose during the beginning of the century as a consequence of the historical events that Spain was experiencing at that time. They used to make references to past times , but equally as important was their use of the Spanish landscape, as a symbol of the nation. Their poems and novels were full of descriptions of Catilla, Andalucia...and in some aspects they observed the cities as enemies of their interests, the landscape.

When reading Howards End I realised of those similarities between this book and the Spanish movement, specially with both the English and the Spanish references to landscape. Consequently I found it particularly interesting to concentrate on this subject : The relation of the landscape with the national identity.
