PAPER 1
COMPARATIVE
STUDY: JOHN OSBORNE, SAMUEL BECKETT
AND
My comparative study is going to focus on the main plays of John
Osborne
(Look
back in anger), Samuel Beckett (Waiting for Godot), and Arnold
Wesker (The
kitchen).
Although
these three plays are written after of World War II, these
authors
consider
them dramatists of the time of the post-war period. This is
a time of
displeasure
with the society and it is reflected in the plays of the
authors.
In
the years 50 there is a group of writers called the “Angry
Young Men" being outstanding members Osborne and Wesker. We
account of the influence of angry young men because in he plays
of Osborne and Wesker the mains characters are cruel men,
rebellious
and of strong character and that is the model of the angry young
men.
Beginning to compare three plays we realize the number of
characters. John
Osborne
and Samuel Beckett have more or less the same number, 5
characters. To great
difference
is that the Kitchen has around 30 characters. The plays
Look Back in Anger
and
Waiting for Godot are plays of minimum company so the directors
or producers
have
less expenses with the payment of the characters and the putting
in scene.
The plays are represented in two and three acts but that in the
time and space are
very
common among them. Two of them
take place in two days
except Look Back in
Anger
that lasts several weeks. All
has a chronologic order and
they do not
jump
in time.
As
far as the space, all take place in the same place and there isn't
change of stage for example
Look Back in Anger the stage is
an attic, in Waiting for Godot the play takes place in a field
with a tree and The Kitchen in the kitchen.
The three plays have in common the language since they use
colloquial English
and
are easy to understand to facilitate the reading. Also they
have vulgarisms like insults.
