RECEIVED PRONUNCIATION

British English, also known as Recieved Pronunciation (RP) is a type of pronunciation or accent. Is the type of pronunciation which is generally taught in Spanish and other European, universities, neither better nor worse than other accents.

We can say that RP developed from a South Eastern accent, that is, from a geogpraphical accent into a social accent spoken all over the UK although by a relatively small but very influential minority.

We should not confuse RP, an accent, with Standard English: the grammar of the most prestigious variety of English used not only in England but also by many people in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and other parts of the world. Therefore, it is possible to use Standard English grammar and vocabulary with an RP accent, a Welsh accent, a Scottish accent and any one of the many accents in English.
